My lengthy career as an electrical engineer started on the tools in 1969 and developed through design and contract management to professional engineer level. It was interrupted in the nineties when I became Parliamentary Officer for the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG). Before returning to engineering, a period as a mature student led to the University of Sussex awarding me a doctorate on the subject of paternalistic legislation.

My experience with MAG and my political qualifications form the background to my interests in paternalism.

I am currently taking a break from employment to carry out independent research and writing on my specialisms. I am a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Energy Institute. I am also the chair for the Energy Institute Southern Branch and a volunteer Samaritan. I also have a website on energy policy.
